Remember the story about Henny Penny? Henny Penny was criticised for running about and declaring “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”. Those who have pointed out the negative of economic issues have been accused of being a ‘Henny Penny’. To use an Australian colloquial term … some folks have been running about like headless chooks.

Since the great plastic bag debate was reignited by Minister for Environment Peter Garrett’s proposal to ban plastic bags in Australian supermarkets, there have been conflicting measures taken by state governments to reduce plastic bag consumption. South Australia has proposed a ban on all supermarket check-out plastic bags; Victoria has trialled a month long 10 cent plastic bag levy; and the Federal Government is looking at nationally consistent measures to reduce plastic bag usage. Once praised as an excellent invention, the plastic bag has become a national villain.

In a struggling retail market thanks to rising interest rates and hiked petrol prices, the international automotive retailer has remained resilient where the competition has floundered. Over 250 Supercheap Auto stores operate in Australia and New Zealand and more stores are in the pipeline for the 2008/2009 financial year. The Super Cheap Auto Group (“SCA Group”), which also incorporates Boating, Camping, Fishing (BCF) and Goldcross Bicycles is now the seventh largest Australian retailing company by market capitalisation. SCA Group’s Managing Director Peter Birtles spoke with us about the company’s rise and what he’s been up to since he took on the top job.
