Through his business, Hills has been able to explore his passion for good
food (of the sweet kind), his love of creativity and attention to detail and
desire to create an experience, rather than just sell a product. By focussing
on his passions, Hills has been able to sustain his energy to bring his
aspirations into fruition. As his visions have come into reality, other ideas
have emerged and now Hills has his sights set on being the leading
premium chocolate brand in Australia. The ARA Retailer spoke with Hills to
hear the Koko Black story and find out what he has planned for the future.

There is widespread perception among retailers that it is only worth
talking to a retail designer if you want to open an up-market, luxury goods
boutique store. For the rest of the retail formats, no design is necessary,
because ‘we are here just to sell product’, and so it is simply a matter
of putting stock on shelves, and the customers will come and buy it.

Australians generally dream of two things – to own their own home and
to be their own boss. Indeed retailing or opening a retail store appears to be
the easiest entry for Australians to own their own business. Many come to it
with the hope of just maintaining a lifestyle where others see an opportunity
to build a retail business that can become a market leader.

With interest rate rises and escalating petrol and grocery prices, wallets are
being squeezed across the nation. Retail sales in the three months to March
were down 0.1 percent and the March rate rise, which took the cash rate
to a near 12-year high of 7.25 percent, has been challenging for retailers
across the board. Director of Charter Security Mike Ramsay says retailers
are being hit two-fold as some consumers struggle to change their spending
habits and tough economic times mean shoplifting is a "growing problem”.
