In recent months I have noticed that the
demands of Asset Managers of various trusts
have no bounds. The rental increases for some
new leases appear to bear no relationship either
to the market or to the centre’s performance.

Music is an integral component of
a successful retail store. Shoppers
may not even notice store signs,
fixturing or store layout, but they
are very likely to notice the sound.
The right music at the right time
can create a lasting impression,
attracting customers and adding
value through increased sales,
productivity and brand presence.

Increasing rents, limited space in prime locations
and cut throat competition in Australia’s major
cities are prompting some entrepreneurs to look
beyond the big smoke in search of business
opportunities. And, it seems, looking beyond our
major cities might just make sense. In recent
years there has been a trend in ‘downshifting’
where people are moving to regional areas
to lead a simpler life and spend more time
with their families. Others are also looking to
regional areas to seek refuge from the housing
affordability crisis. The result of these trends
has been a marked increase in migration to
regional centres - particularly along the coast
and on commuter belts. The appeal of growing
markets in these towns coupled with lower
establishment and operating costs has presented
an enticing option to some businesses looking
for a head start.

From ad man to leading the front on conscious
consumerism – on the surface, it appears Pierce Cody
might have made a u-turn in his career path. And, in many
regards he has. Once a media entrepreneur running his
highly successful international outdoor signage company, Cody now spends his time cultivating Australia’s first organic supermarket chain, Macro Wholefoods. Despite his ambition on turning the world organic and green, Pierce Cody still has a sharp eye for commercial opportunities. He sees the organics, fair-trade and environmental industry as not just ‘the next big thing’, but more like a movement which is rapidly growing.

Shrinkage costs Australian Retailers AUD$2.256 billion.
In recent years, Australia has enjoyed economic prosperity and consumer spending is at an all
time high. Despite strong sales figures in the Australian retail sector, significant profits are being
lost to shrinkage. One of the major challenges the industry is facing is shrinkage incurred by retail
crime. For the first time the Global Retail Theft Barometer puts a price on what shrinkage costs
retailers and consumers. Mark Gentle, Managing Director of Checkpoint Systems Australia and New
Zealand looks at the research results and discusses how retailers are at their most vulnerable
during the Christmas period.
