7-Eleven CEO, Warren Wilmot, is a firm believer of experiential learning.
And, it was this belief that led him to discover his passion for retail. He
has done it all – driving trucks, picking potatoes, he even worked as a
swimming pool attendant. Wilmot wanted diversity in his career, so he
could learn new skills and gain nous while he travelled. He first enjoyed a
taste of retail while working as a restaurant manager, which eventually
inspired his passion for the retail environment. His interest in retail and
the desire for a career change led him to 7-Eleven, where he now
oversees the operations of 374 stores in Queensland, New South Wales
and Victoria. Now in the top job, Wilmot is at the helm of 7-Eleven’s
‘Energise Everyone’ program – a strategy aimed at significantly growing
the business over the next decade, he has boosted company profits to
record highs, and won 2008 Franchisor of the Year.

Supercheap Autos driving a winning team. In a struggling retail market thanks to rising interest rates and hiked petrol
prices, the international automotive retailer has remained resilient where
the competition has floundered. Over 250 Supercheap Auto stores operate
in Australia and New Zealand and more stores are in the pipeline for the
2008/2009 financial year. The Super Cheap Auto Group (“SCA Group”),

Bicycles is now the seventh largest Australian retailing company by
market capitalisation. SCA Group’s Managing Director Peter Birtles spoke

Through his business, Hills has been able to explore his passion for good
food (of the sweet kind), his love of creativity and attention to detail and
desire to create an experience, rather than just sell a product. By focussing
on his passions, Hills has been able to sustain his energy to bring his
aspirations into fruition. As his visions have come into reality, other ideas
have emerged and now Hills has his sights set on being the leading
premium chocolate brand in Australia. The ARA Retailer spoke with Hills to
hear the Koko Black story and find out what he has planned for the future.

Few thirty somethings could boast about running a national retail giant. Stephen Heath could have, but that’s not his style. His focus is on getting the job done. By the age of 34, Heath was appointed Managing Director of the national sporting retailer, Rebel Sport. Heath had been the golden boy among Harvey Norman’s stable of talent, demonstrating a knack for turning floundering stores into profitable operations. When Gerry Harvey bought majority shares in Rebel in 2001, he needed someone to take the reins. Heath was an obvious choice and Harvey had never shied away from giving his best people a chance.

From ad man to leading the front on conscious
consumerism – on the surface, it appears Pierce Cody
might have made a u-turn in his career path. And, in many
regards he has. Once a media entrepreneur running his
highly successful international outdoor signage company, Cody now spends his time cultivating Australia’s first organic supermarket chain, Macro Wholefoods. Despite his ambition on turning the world organic and green, Pierce Cody still has a sharp eye for commercial opportunities. He sees the organics, fair-trade and environmental industry as not just ‘the next big thing’, but more like a movement which is rapidly growing.

Mag Nation is a far cry from your ordinary breed of magazine retailer. Decked out
with an elegant fit out, wireless Internet connection, a café and over 4000 magazine
titles on shelf, enthusiasts, lunching office workers and weary shoppers could easily
while away hours on end flicking through magazines covering anything from macramé
to medieval archery.

The ARA Retailer has recently profiled a number of CEOs and former CEOs from large retail organisations, however much of the retail landscape is made up of small to medium sized businesses and it’s these stores that give a retail precinct a distinct flavour. Probe a little further and many of these businesses will appear quirky and are bound to have an interesting story behind them.

Naomi Milgrom – a third generation retailer – has
had big shoes to fill. Her father, Marc Besen, was
instrumental in putting the Sussan retail chain on
Australia’s map. Besen expanded the company through
two major acquisitions and was also holding the reigns
when the company launched its famous “This goes with
that…” campaign in the late seventies. With the Sussan
brand being an Australian household name, Besen had
set a benchmark that would be hard to match.
