ACT WorkCover has recently announced in the media a focus ensuring that forklifts used in workplaces are operated in a safe manner. This latest focus is as a result of a construction worker being seriously injured when struck by a load falling from a forklift as well as an accident where a forklift dropped a load of steel weighing more than 800kg on the leg of a truck driver, who had his leg amputated at the knee as a result.
ACT WorkCover has emphasised a number of things that they want employers to focus on in regards to the safe operation of forklifts including:
- The use of exclusion zones to ensure the safety of workers, customers, delivery drivers and other pedestrians;
- An active process to discourage pedestrians from coming too close to forklifts;
- Not raising or lowering loads whilst driving;
- Putting into place speed limits and ensuring drivers observe these;
- Ensuring that all loads are secured;
- Not creating makeshift work platforms relying upon the raised tynes of a forklift; and
- Not operating forklifts on uneven ground if possible.
In a recent media release, ACT WorkCover announced that Inspectors will be paying close attention to workplaces that use forklifts, and ensuring they are used in a safe manner. More information relating to the safe operation of forklifts can be found on the ACT WorkCover website at: www.workcover.act.gov.au.
