Quarterly inflation figures released by the Australia Bureau of Statistics show Darwin now has the second lowest inflation rate in the nation.
Treasurer Delia Lawrie said this indicates that the Territory economy is continuing to outperform other states. “We have one of the strongest economies in the nation and the inflation figures show we are continuing along a good track,” she said.
“Darwin’s annual figure for the March quarter is 3.9 percent compared to 4.2 percent for the eight capital cities.
“These figures are another endorsement for the Territory economy as inflation in most major cities has surged ahead this quarter.”
Ms Lawrie acknowledged that although inflation in Darwin had increased, the Territory has the second lowest rate in the nation.
“With the Territory’s strong economic growth, strong employment growth and the highest retail spending growth it is quite an achievement to restrain inflation to the second lowest in the country,” Ms Lawrie said.
